Position Title: Telematics Systems EngineerReports to: Head of Technical and TrainingLocation: Home BasedSalary: £55,000Position SummaryThe Telematics Systems Engineer will be required to work closely with Central Engineering teams, Local Business Units and both the IT Director and Director of Decarbonisation Delivery. The main purpose of the role is to build an in-depth understanding of the telematics technology aspects of the new electric, fuel cell and existing diesel fleet. The successful applicant will fully support the current Hitachi battery contract management system and the battery electric and fuel cell vehicle telematics program whilst ensuring First Bus has an in-depth level of knowledge, skills, and capability of telemetry.Telemetry is an essential part of the role, to manage the technology, interfaces, and back office relating to charging of electric vehicles and provide telematics technology support to new business opportunities on electrification and vehicle technology including Electric vehicle battery chemistry.Battery Electric and Fuel Cell vehicle technology is new, exciting and market leading. An essential part of the role is to ensure the new technology manufacturers can work with and integrate with our current systems.Importantly, includes the role of growing data expertise in this telemetry space going forwards, particularly exploiting the opportunities data will bring, and working with our data and analytics team, and our external 3rd parties, to develop new technological benefits and opportunities to First Bus.The role will combine project management and business analysis and it is vitally important to communicate effectively with all internal and external stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of the UK Bus telemetry strategy program.Key Accountabilities & ResponsibilitiesDevelop a clear communication and working relationship with Hitachi (Battery contract management system), internal and external stakeholders – primarily the vehicle manufacturers - ensuring each party understands their responsibilities and accountabilities.Develop and design the telemetry technology program, telemetry dashboard, ongoing software maintenance schedules and required to bring First Bus digital maintenance program and Hitachi BCMS requirements.Maintain the dashboard for vehicle and charging infrastructure maintenance and being the digital vehicle data owner for all Battery electric and fuel cell vehicles.Manage the Hitachi BCMS contract and related SLA's and KPI's and the overall Electric vehicle battery warranty conditions.Control and report on risk management ensuring stakeholder awareness with appropriate mitigations presented to support delivery of telemetry projects.Telematics data lead for both vehicle maintenance and operational functions and ensuring electric vehicle fleet performance is enhanced.Produce, maintain telemetry systems and data maps to ensure a detailed understanding of the telematics technology and related processes involved for vehicle operation and ongoing maintenance. A focus on integration into our asset management system, data and reporting in EAM and onboard 3rd party systems, APIs, and protocols.Provide direction to internal telemetry technology team, engineering data analysts, and IT team responsible for onboard retail, safety, and passenger solutions.Ensure the necessary interfacing and reporting of telemetry and vehicle diagnostics data into the engineering maintenance solutions.The role will focus on electric vehicle technology, battery power assurance and telemetry software and data to inform maintenance activities, new to the industry. It is vital important that a ‘security first' mentality is adopted. Embed into the engineering and maintenance aspects of vehicle management. Requires awareness through education, clear policy, process and procedures to be defined to support the management of the vehicles.Champion and implement safety improvement activity designed to achieve First Bus's aim of zero harm.Change management – telemetry technology and software updates and planned and co-ordinated, evidence of testing and sign off is essential to maintain an optimum and efficient fleet.Skills/ExperienceUnderstanding of Battery Electric and Fuel Cell battery chemistry, data, and output signals.Qualified with a recognised engineering body (City & Guilds, IMI, SOE, IRTE)Proven experience of managing engineering vehicle faults architecture and interfaces and clear solid understanding of the electric and fuel cell technology and functions.Ability to develop, share and demonstrate strong subject matter expertise on telematics.Project management and process improvement.Ability to communicate clearly, with impact and engage effectively with senior stakeholders on the wider First Bus program.Highly competent at written and presentation skills on technically complex and high-profile projects, report on issues management and outline risks to senior stakeholders.Strong at decision making – ability to deal with conflicting interests and hugely results driven and complex contracts.Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify trends and proactively address issues.Preferable to have an engineering qualification of Higher National Certificate/Diploma or equivalent.Must be a competent user of Microsoft Office packages, particularly Excel to manipulate and present data in tables and graphs.Preferably trained or experienced in reliability centred maintenance and able to develop Failure Mode Effect and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA).Rewards & BenefitsYour health is important to us which is why we offer Simply Health & Smart Health for you and your dependents at no cost to you!
