IWM's remit is global and inclusive in its exploration of war's impact on the lives of men, women and children, from 1914 to the present day. Our collection of over 33m objects covers all aspects of conflict involving Britain, its former Empire and the Commonwealth, and includes art, film, photography, printed material, documents and sound. Through our family of five museums in London, Cambridgeshire and Manchester, off-site programmes, and digital content, we explore the causes, course and consequences of war and promote understanding and empathy, by connecting diverse audiences with human stories of ingenuity, courage, sacrifice and resilience.

Job Summary:

The Director, Learning and Engagement will develop and deliver a strategy that supports IWM's purpose and vision and aligns with the wider Audiences and Public Engagement strategy. The Director, Learning and Engagement will have an exceptional understanding of museum pedagogy and a proven ability to develop effective strategies and innovative programmes, with and for diverse audiences, aligned to an organisation's USP. They will develop and deliver programmes that achieve measurable outcomes and support IWM's wider strategic plans and priorities.

Responsibilities:

  • Working with the Audience & Public Engagement leadership to develop a compelling, creative and relevant learning and engagement strategy across sites, aligned to IWM's USP, vision and purpose, and that amplifies the team's overarching priorities and approach.
  • Working with the Collections and Curatorial team to develop and deliver co-created and co-curated programmes and projects, involving individuals and communities with relevant lived experience, based on a commitment to process, genuine collaboration, openness and respect.
  • Implementing effective development processes and evaluation procedures that foster innovative, critically rigorous and focussed audience engagement propositions.
  • Leading and inspiring public engagement and learning across platforms and sites, including digital, drawing on a variety of creative strategies, disciplines and practitioners, and working closely with other teams and the Collections & Curatorial Directorate.
  • Working closely with the Development team, to maximise fundraising and supporter engagement around strands of critical enquiry and thematic focus that span the Audience and Public Engagement teams.
  • Contributing to successful income generating strategies and supporting revenue generating opportunities across IWM.
  • Overseeing the implementation schedule and budget of Learning and Engagement programmes.
