We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Director of Construction to lead our construction operations based in Birmingham. You will be fully accountable for the safe, efficient delivery of all construction projects within the regional area. This role involves senior-level management, operational oversight, safety compliance, and project delivery, ensuring alignment with VVBs CORE values. You will also manage the Birmingham office and provide leadership to construction teams, ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest safety standards. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Health & Safety: Oversee all health and safety regulations across multiple construction projects, ensuring compliance with legislation and best practices. Team Leadership: Ensure all project management teams are fully resourced, competent, and performing effectively, while leading the recruitment and development of senior construction staff. Project Delivery: Collaborate with installation teams and manage construction efficiency to meet or exceed KPIs. Implement performance improvement plans where necessary. Compliance: Ensure compliance with construction documentation, certificates, and industry standards, with a strong focus on Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE). Stakeholder Management: Liaise with clients, installation teams, suppliers, and sector directors to resolve issues and ensure successful project outcomes. Reporting: Prepare and deliver monthly performance reports to highlight risks, construction progress, and lessons learned. Workforce Management: Oversee workforce allocation, team assignments, and development programmes, including apprenticeships and management upskilling. PERSON SPECIFICATION: Technical Knowledge & Skills: Proven ability to design and implement operational strategies. Strong knowledge of HSE legislation and safety culture development. Experience with NEC/JCT and other industry contracts. Solid understanding of electrical, mechanical, and communication installation standards. Competence in MS Office Suite, especially Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Experience with tunnelling, underground projects, and turnkey project delivery (D&B, T&C, maintenance). QUALIFICATIONS: Essential: Degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, or Communications). Membership in professional institutions (CIBSE, IET, or equivalent). HSE training (SMSTS). Full UK Driving Licence. Desirable: Project management qualifications (APM/Prince2), Chartered Engineer status, sustainability knowledge. Competencies & Behaviours: Strong leadership and people management skills. Excellent verbal and written communication at a technical level. Decisive and able to work under pressure with a positive, solution-oriented approach. Collaborative and flexible, willing to travel and work outside of standard hours if required. A mentor and motivator for junior engineers and apprentices. EXPERIENCE: Senior management experience within a construction environment (infrastructure, utilities, heavy industrial). Proven delivery experience at Tier 1 or Tier 2 level across diverse projects (D&B, installation, maintenance). Experience working for both M&E contractors and client/main contractors.
