Economic Analyst – Advising Developing World Partners

About you This role will suit you if you have excellent economic analytical skills. Ideally, you would also have wider public policy analysis skills and experience. For example, you may be an early career civil servant, a think tanker, or an earlier career academic. It is an ideal opportunity for an early career professional passionate about using their skills to achieve change in developing countries. The role will act as an excellent launchpad for a career in several areas, including policymaking, policy-relevant research, and international development. You will have 2-5 years of working experience. You might have experience working in developing countries and the international development sector. But more likely, you will have strong academic training—including in economics and social science —and an ambition to apply these skills to address real-world policy problems practically. Finally, you will also be an excellent people-person, capable of building working relationships with people from a range of backgrounds. About the role The role’s core focus will be providing high-quality, timely, and policy-relevant analytical support for a range of Kivu’s projects. This could include a combination of some long-term strands of work on Kivu’s ongoing projects and shorter, rapid work on time-sensitive projects. Your work will feed into the support Kivu provides for a range of local partners, including local think tanks, civil society organisations, and government bodies (e.g., spending ministries, and Prime Minister’s Offices). This will include input into Kivu’s projects, such as work with civil society on labour market reform in Papua New Guinea, support for think tanks working on fiscal policy in Cambodia and Malaysia, work on green growth in Sierra Leone, and support for the Government of Zambia on economic reform. Kivu sees the role evolving to include increased direct engagement with local partners. It will allow the successful applicant to deepen their analytical skills, but also gain wider policymaking skills including political analysis, policy development, and project delivery. There may also be opportunities to develop commercial skills and support Kivu’s business development and fundraising. Day-to-day, the role will involve working with Kivu’s highly motivated and senior team, which has extensive experience in policymaking. Salary and Practicalities £30-35,000 (depending on experience) Kivu is based in the UK, but we are open to you being based elsewhere.
