Hestia is committed to putting Health and Safety at the heart of service delivery and the Audit function role is a key component in this. This role will help to ensure that staff understand their role in H&S and that residential settings are safe.

A day in this role looks like….

As a Health & Safety Compliance Officer at Hestia, you will play a crucial role in our service. Your contributions will directly influence the lives of our service users, guiding them towards a path of empowerment and independence.

A day will never look the same and some of the things you can expect to do/be responsible for are:

  • Carrying out inspections and audits and ensuring health and safety rules are being observed. • Providing safety advice and guidance, engaging and coaching staff to help drive a positive safety culture. Reminding managers of their health and safety obligations and responsibilities and providing practical advice to line managers on required standards and necessary actions.
  • Inducting new managers and teams in Hestia health and safety systems and processes and signposting them to further safety training opportunities.
  • Developing positive relationships with operational teams to improve “on the-ground” knowledge and practice, with the aim of achieving a clean, well-maintained and injury-free work environment.
  • Providing advice on the completion of risk assessments and local health and safety documentation, advising where further assessment is required and ensuring documentation meets safety standards.
  • Raising any health, safety or environmental concerns to managers, highlighting corrective action and priorities, and monitoring for completion within agreed time scales. Specific concerns will relate to general property condition, practices and processes being followed and training needs.
  • Undertaking any post-inspections and following up outstanding actions from safety audits to ensure work can be safely signed off.
  • Monitoring and investigating reports filed through internal reporting systems in regard to accidents, health and safety incidents and near misses. Ascertaining underlying causes and making recommendations to prevent recurrences.
  • Reporting on the progress with the health and safety inspection/ audit programme, identifying any recurring issues, contractor/ landlord performance etc. offering solutions and escalating to senior managers as required.
  • Working with the wider Corporate Services team, maintaining effective and up to date records in relation to health and safety, feeding into periodic reports such as workplace inspections, audit follow up, accident trend analysis and external quality accreditation schemes.
  • Building positive working relationships with external partners and agencies involved in improving health and safety across Hestia services.
  • Maintaining and applying a current working knowledge of all Health and Safety Executive (HSE) legislation to support operational compliance and working towards a recognised health and safety qualification

  • Self-motivated, able to manage time effectively, able to work independently and take ownership as well as working as part of a wider team.
  • Ability to travel to services across London
  • Organised, with excellent attention to detail and good report-writing and IT skills. Proven experience of using computer based systems to accurately record work.
  • Knowledge and understanding of safeguarding issues and ability to address them appropriately.
