The salary is broken down as £42,232 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £50,385. Plus, a location allowance of £1,841 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

Location: New Scotland Yard, Westminster. In this role each week you are also expected work at other Met buildings across London as part of a blended working agreement. There are also some opportunities for remote working when appropriate.

Contract: 12 months FTC (Mat Leave cover)

This communications role is integral to the success of the Metropolitan Police Service. Our police officers and staff depend on excellent communication and engagement.

This role is part of a brand new team that will help the Communications and Engagement Directorate to deliver to the Met's priorities of More Trust, Less Crime and High Standards and help our local policing teams deliver effective communication and engagement to their communities.

We are looking for a great writer and verbal communicator who will be excited by the opportunity to deliver a wide range of activity, and the prospect of building strong connections with colleagues, partners and communities across London. This role will support your team leader and head of unit in several ways.

  • Assist them as they develop the Met's overarching communications strategy, this will require collaboration with the rest of the unit to help design plans that meet the New Met for London priorities. It may require some desk research, working with the insight teams and working with local policing teams to help formulate ideas, plans and positive news stories.
  • Be part of a team of strategic communication and multi-disciplinary communication advisers working with colleagues from across the department and with local policing colleagues to seamlessly deliver a daily drumbeat of communications to local communities across channels with supportive stakeholder and influencer voices.
  • You will work seamlessly with the content and channels and good news communication teams to deliver a daily drum beat of proactive stories across media, internal and digital outlets.

Key Result Areas

  • Assisting your head of unit in the research, writing and implementation of the MPS's overarching comms strategy.
  • Support the strategic planning of communication activity across communication disciplines, developing and delivering three month plans on your portfolio and priorities, and providing clear and concise communication advice.
  • Supporting other teams to develop and deliver their three-month delivery plans in alignment to the aims and objectives of the comms strategy.
  • Support local police communicators across London's 12 Basic Command Units to enhance good news and build community trust.
  • Provide advice and support to local policing teams to assist them in best practice use of local digital channels.
  • Support other communications teams across the department in ensuring a daily drum beat of positive visual stories across the Met's social media channels (central and local).
  • Upskill local policing teams, developing them and providing toolkits and advice to make it easy for them to succeed in their local communication and engagement.
  • Build great links with local news outlets, brief them regularly and develop and maintain relationships with other locally influential digital content creators and local platforms.
  • Work with key departmental and organisational leads to ensure opportunities for local communications and engagement, partnership and integration are maximised.
  • Support local policing teams to deliver internal communication priorities and campaigns locally.
  • Support the running of a library of images and templates that local teams can use to promote their own comms; commissioning, ensuring permissions and appropriateness, and currency of images.
  • Flex to support departmental priorities which may see the role holder at times supporting delivery outside of their immediate role.
  • Work in collaboration with the wider communications leadership team, helping to create a collaborative and inclusive culture aligned with our values.
  • Lead others, monitoring performance and provide extra support where necessary to increase capability and confidence to ensure delivery.
  • Be part of a culture of continuous learning in which we evaluate and improve ways of working and communications delivery.
  • Every member of our team is expected to be multi-skilled and work across several communication disciplines using modern up-to-date professional practice.
  • Understand the New Met for London plan and the Commissioner's priorities, and use this to implement key messages clearly, accurately, coherently, consistently and creatively.
  • Represent communications, including in organisational or partnership meetings, to provide high quality communication and engagement advice across the breath of the communication spectrum.

Additional Information - Work pattern: 36 hours a week. You may be required to work occasional weekends or out of hours with appropriate notice.
