Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen within our Engineering Department for a Skilled Technician, to be based out of our operation in the Port of Southampton. Reporting to the Engineering Team Leader, the Skilled Technician will be involved in a wide range of planned and breakdown/repair maintenance of heavy machinery such as straddle carriers, tractors, light vehicles/trailers, empty container handlers, mobile elevated working platforms, and associated equipment, which incorporate PLC based control and diagnostic systems.


We have varying shifts available covering both day and night shifts, working weekdays and weekends.


About The Role

How will you contribute:

  • Carry out planned maintenance and general upkeep on the straddle carrier, tractor and trailer fleet efficiently and effectively and to the required standard.
  • Record defects on planned maintenance and report to Workshop Supervisor.
  • Record position and stock number tested items in line with Docks Regulations and British Standards Statutory Regulations.
  • Work on terminal electrical systems i.e. High mast lighting, reefers, and cranes if required etc.
  • Undertake on the job training and residential courses as required to best of ability.
  • Work inside the workshop, outside on the terminal, in all weather conditions, confined spaces and at height as required.
  • Be conversant with drive and control systems of DP World Southampton Straddle Carriers, Diesel Electric, Diesel Hydraulic Drives of Terminal Equipment and Spreaders and understand all of the associated software packages. Be conversant with working with voltages from 6 v – 500 v Plus.
  • Be conversant with all hydraulic systems based on Straddle Carriers and spreaders.
  • Undertake mechanical / electrical projects as required.


What will you Bring.

Qualifications, Skills & Experience:

  • Candidates will have completed a recognised Engineering Apprenticeship and an appropriate academic achievement such as City & Guilds, BTEC ONC or equivalent.
  • Good level of numeracy and literacy and IT skills.
  • Previous experience of working on industrial equipment and an understanding of equipment functionality and service requirements are required.
  • Sound mechanical working knowledge of pneumatics, hydraulics, diesel, and electric engines. Additional requirements include welding and fabrication experience, as well as interrogation of PLC systems for fault finding/diagnosis.
  • Able to work effectively on own and as part of a team.
  • Good interpersonal skills and must be able to communication at all levels of seniority.
