This role is with the Physical Security team, who are part of the Group Incident Management function sitting within the Security & Resilience Department. The Team’s mission and responsibility is to monitor and assess the physical threat landscape (e.g terrorism, civil unrest and organised crime) in order to drive timely and effective mitigations to protect the Nationwide estate, physical assets and personnel in order to provide a safe and secure working environment for colleagues, customers and visitors and providing operational resilience.

The Function maintains the organisations’ physical security policy and control standards and provides SME physical security consultancy services to business areas as well as delivering threat assessment and investigation of physical security breaches ensuring policy is adhered to and/or risks managed appropriately.

For this job you'll spend at least two days per week, or if part time you'll spend 40% of your working time, based at either our Swindon, London, Northampton, Dunfermline, Bournemouth or Sheffield office. What you’ll be doing


As an experienced physical security specialist, you will be working alongside the Physical Security Manager and Physical Security Senior Analyst to provide expert advice and guidance on physical, personnel and counter-terrorism security matters, and in doing so, be a ‘go to subject matter expert’ to directly influence and challenge how the Society protects its people, sites and other assets against identified threats.


You will be analysing all-source intelligence to make an assessment of the physical and personnel security threat to the business and undertaking security vulnerability assessments / audits and articulating the results of assessments and mitigation recommendations to business stakeholders up to and including Exco-1.


You will draw on your extensive knowledge of physical and personnel security threat methodologies to provide consultancy and advice to business units to ensure the application of physical security standards within day to day Run the Business and Change activities including where necessary, developing and communicating Operational Requirements.


You will provide SME support to the investigation and resolution of any physical security breaches, including where appropriate, engagement with law enforcement or other external investigative agencies and undertaking Post Incident Reviews ensuring any lessons learnt are documented and communicated.

You will provide SME support to develop Incident Response Plans for major Physical Security incidents such as terrorist attack, bomb threat, civil unrest, robbery etc and ensuring such plans are reviewed, tested and exercised in alignment with the Group Significant Incident Management requirement. You will also be providing physical security expertise to Bronze, Silver and Gold Incident Response forums where required as part of operational resilience activities.

You will develop and foster internal relationships with key business units such as Property Services, Payments, Retail Operations, Economic Crime and Compliance and externally with Financial Services peers, Industry working forums such LINK and UK Finance and law enforcement.


You will be supporting the maturation of the physical security Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) framework to ensure compliance with the Enterprise Risk Management Framework.


About you


Essential measurable experience


  • An Industry recognised certification such as Security Institute Advanced Certificate / Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Security Management, ASIS Certified Protection Professional (CPP), Associate Protection Professional (APP) or Physical Security Professional (PSP) or ISMI Certified Security Management Professional (CSMP) or have willingness to work towards them. If no certifications are held, you are able to demonstrate equivalent workplace experience (for example advancement through Civil Service Physical Security career pathway).
  • Established knowledge and experience of physical security operational delivery in a UK Corporate security or related environment.
  • Experience in operational response planning for physical security incident, emergency & crisis response situations
  • Strong written communication and presentational skills with an ability to translate technical and complex concepts into digestible language which is accessible for a range of audiences.
  • A proven track record of using impact to influence and challenge.
  • A proactive and positive approach, with the ability to self-motivate and see tasks through to completion
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills and ability to build strong partnerships within an organisation and externally and with the confidence and ability to act as an ambassador for the Physical Security Team, the wider Security & Resilience Department and the Society.
