The Wellcome Trust is a global charitable foundation. We improve health for everyone by funding science, leading policy and advocacy campaigns, and building partnerships.

We plan to spend £16bn over the next ten years, funding new discoveries in life, health, and wellbeing, and taking on three global health challenges: mental health, infectious disease and climate and health.

These challenges need the bold science we support, but they won't be solved by science alone.

We are looking for a Head of Global Government Relations to join our team to help advocate for our mission to improve health and save lives.

Where in Wellcome will I be working?

You will be leading a team working on global government relations as part of a broader Government Relations and Strategic Partnerships (GRSP) team, reporting to the Associate Director, Government Relations and Strategic Partnerships. You will be responsible for developing and delivering strategy to deliver Wellcome's influencing goals in key geographies and multilateral fora, including the G7 and G20, working closely with the Head of European Government Relations to lead the government relations practice for Wellcome.

What will I be doing?

You will provide strategic leadership and oversight for Wellcome's global government relations work, setting ambitious strategic objectives and ensuring a coherent and consistent approach to our political advocacy.

As a Head of Global Government Relations you will:

  • Act as a thought-leader, senior representative and adviser for Wellcome, strengthening and expanding support for Wellcome's priorities at the very highest levels of government.

  • Build, manage, lead and motivate an integrated, inclusive and flexible team, ensuring that people with the right range of skills and experience are recruited and retained, and that their skills and professional capabilities are maximised.

  • Support and hold the team to account to deliver high quality work at all times and pursue continuous improvement and innovation in what we deliver and how we deliver it.

  • As a member of the GRSP management team, you will play a key role in the overall leadership and direction-setting of the team, as well as contributing to a diverse and inclusive culture across the organisation at all times.

  • Contribute to the creation and development of a diverse and inclusive culture across the organisation, collaborating across departments.

Is this job for me?

This is an exciting opportunity for someone with significant political advocacy or public affairs experience, with a passion for achieving change through influencing. You will need to have substantive leadership experience in government relations or public affairs, and to have spent time working in a similar role within health or science policy and advocacy. As a practiced advocate with proven influencing skills, you will be highly relational and able to flex to a diverse range of stakeholders and engagement approaches.

We are looking for someone with:

  • Sound experience of successfully building, leading and developing diverse and high-performing teams, as well as demonstrable strategic thinking and planning skills.

  • Substantial, senior level experience of leading government relations / public affairs work.

  • Significant experience of working in a similar role within health policy / advocacy programmes as well as working in global health, research and development for health or similar.
