An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated SLT to join the Band 6 rotation within our highly skilled Speech and Language Therapy service. The post holder will have previous experience providing SLT assessment and treatment of communication and swallowing disorders within an MDT setting. The post holder will carry their own caseload and have an important role in liaising with other specialist services to optimise patient outcomes. The rotations include the following settings: acute medical, neurosciences and neurocardiac (based at St George's Hospital, Tooting), neuro-rehabilitation (at the Wolfson Neuro-rehabilitation Centre at Queen Mary's Hospital, Roehampton) and community (based at St John's Therapy Centre, Clapham Junction), where this role will start.

The post holder will receive regular supervision and support to develop specialist clinical skills. They will be joining a highly supportive and innovative Speech and Language Therapy Department, offering well established CPD opportunities.

The post holder will participate in weekend working as part of the therapies 7 day working policy.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the assessment, management and treatment of their own caseload of patients with communication and/or swallowing impairment as a result of neurological conditions or a range of medical conditions. A significant proportion of these patients will have English as an additional language (EAL).The post holder will be expected to have a sound knowledge of SLT assessment and management of aphasia, cognitive communication difficulties, dysarthria, apraxia, and dysphagia and to have had some exposure to videofluoroscopy.

The post holder will be expected to work within multi-disciplinary teams providing coordinated individualised management and/or treatment for patients, involving families as necessary and providing appropriate recommendations and training to multi-disciplinary team members.

The post holder will also assist with the work of student placements, provide guidance for speech and language therapy assistants and provide clinical support to other therapists/staff on SLT issues. The post holder may be requested to participate in research/audit projects in specialist area using research methodology.

The post holder will take part in the weekend working rota.

Essential

  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification
  • Health and Care Professions Council - Licence to Practice
  • Registered Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapist
  • Evidence of completion of specialist short courses and self directed study

Experience
Essential

  • Relevant experience as a Speech & Language Therapist
  • Working as part of a multidisciplinary team

Desirable

  • Relevant experience at undergraduate/post graduate level including clinical training, clinical experience with an adult caseload in a previous job or clinical placement.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Well established knowledge of a range of assessment tools relevant to specific client group with speech, language, communication and swallowing difficulties
  • Well established knowledge of a range of therapeutic and management approaches to relevant to client group
  • Well established knowledge of dysphagia assessment and management
