Our indices and assessments are used as a settlement tool for freight derivative trades, for benchmarking physical contracts and as a general indicator of freight market performance extending coverage to the wider logistics chain including containers and air freight.


Headquartered in London, we have regional offices in Singapore, Shanghai, Athens, Stamford, and Houston. Since 2016, the Baltic Exchange is part of the Singapore Exchange (SGX) Group.


The purpose of this role in to ensure that the Compliance Function operates effectively, independently and that the firm is complying with all applicable laws, rules and regulations, as well as internal codes of conduct, policies and procedures.


Reporting to the Head of Compliance, the successful candidate's responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Ensure regulatory compliance in all areas related to benchmark administration of the Baltic Exchange subsidiary entity (such as Conduct Rules, Conflicts of Interest, Personal Account Dealing, etc).
  • Ensure regulatory compliance with data protection requirements for the Baltic Exchange, assist in the development of documentation for first line business departments and undertake periodic monitoring (GDPR).
  • Keeping up to date with relevant regulatory development/changes that may affect the Baltic Exchange or its subsidiary benchmark administrator entity, assisting in their interpretation and impact for the Baltic Exchange’s business activities.
  • Assist Head of Compliance in all compliance activities related to benchmark administration in accordance with the UK BMR, EU BMR, IOSCO PFBs and IOSCO PRAs.
  • Contribute to the preparation of documentation and compliance programmes for annual audit.
  • Support the Head of Compliance in the review and update of relevant documentation (Guide to Market Benchmarks (GMB), Air Freight Guide, Guide to FBX benchmarks), strategies, policies and procedures.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of Compliance and Risk programmes across the Baltic Exchange. Deployment of the risk management framework across the Baltic Exchange and its regulated activities to gain awareness and adherence with controls.
  • Assist in the review and management of risk registers, risk heat maps and key controls alongside the identification of new and emerging risks.
  • Ensure logging, reporting, investigation and management of incidents is undertaken in accordance with appropriate procedures.
  • Assist with compliance activities and engage with IT department on disaster recovery planning, business continuity measures and impact assessments for the Baltic Exchange together with any associated policy drafting and risk assessments.
  • Assist with the preparation of compliance reports to the board and oversight functions.
  • Perform monitoring of the communications from Panellists to identify instances of actual/potential market abuse or other procedural or regulatory issues.
  • Provide second line review of KYC queries where required.
  • Liaise with SGX legal, compliance and risk departments which may involve seeking legal assistance, providing periodic reporting, engaging with compliance queries or undertaking compliance activities for SGX-Group compliance.
  • Assist in the audit process, liaison with external auditors for annual audits.
  • Assist in the investigation of complaints, to include independent compliance investigation, compiling evidentiary documentation, and complaints response in accordance with the Baltic Exchange’s policy and procedure.
  • Support the Head of Compliance in maintaining positive relationships with the regulator, addressing any regulatory queries and communication to the regulator in a proactive and transparent manner.
  • Provide administrative and organisational support to the Head of Compliance.

  • Bachelors degree supplemented by a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in the field of compliance or risk management.
  • Strong basic IT skills in Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and the remainder of the MS Office suite.
  • Compliance related qualifications desirable.
  • Knowledge and experience of the Compliance Function.
  • Knowledge and understanding of FCA Handbook and FCA requirements.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • High degree of professional integrity.
  • Proactive and personable approach.
  • Ability to provide information in a clear, concise and logical format.
  • Good written/oral communication skills.
  • Very good at multi-tasking.
  • Good organisation skills with the ability to prioritise, plan workloads and work to tight deadlines.
  • Ability to roll up sleeves and work with team members in a hands-on capacity.
  • Co-operative, ‘can-do’ attitude and is willing to continually learn and improve.
