Head of Long-Term Investment Strategy

London (Canary Wharf 2-3 days with hybrid working)


The role

Reporting to the Chief investment Officer, this newly created position as Head of Long-Term Investment Strategy will advise the CIO and asset allocation committee to make the right long term investment decisions. This includes ensuring the Investment Cases, Asset Class Dashboard and other market indicators which are central to Nest’s asset allocation decisions are maintained and enhanced. In addition, the Head of Long-Term Strategy will work with the CIO, Responsible Investment and Investment Risk teams to refine the benchmarks used in the investment portfolios and improve their alignment with Nest’s investment beliefs and requirements.


This includes:


  • Asset class research to enhance the asset class dashboard and make recommendations for the asset allocation of Nest’s portfolios.
  • Conducting research to develop and maintain Nest’s investment cases including the investment thesis, anti-thesis and burning questions and any metrics used to monitor them.
  • Presenting research findings and recommendations for changes to the CIO and asset allocation committee as appropriate.
  • Conducting research into alternative index construction approaches which improve alignment with Nest’s investment beliefs and improve future expected risk adjusted returns.
  • Leading, coaching and developing a high performing Long-Term Investment Strategy team which improves the investment outcomes Nest delivers for its members.
  • Being an ambassador for Nest Invest driving standards in investment management and raising Nest profile as a leading asset owner and partner in the pension and investment management industries.


The person

The successful candidate will be an experienced Investment Strategist with a long-term investment philosophy. In addition:


  • A strong understanding of financial markets and the relationships between asset classes,
  • A strong understanding of benchmark construction.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills including an ability to communicate complex technical subjects to non-expert audiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to build a high performing team and work collaboratively with colleagues from other disciplines.

Directorate/Department Overview

The Investment directorate (Nest Invest) is responsible for investing members’ contributions in order to grow their retirement pots over the long-term and to generate the best income in retirement for as many members as possible. The responsibilities of the team include:


  • Asset allocation and portfolio risk management
  • Manager selection and monitoring
  • Responsible investment
  • Investment communications
  • Fund administration
  • Investment technology and financial modelling
  • Contributing to the development of the investment proposition


From December 2019, the Nest Investment team was seconded into Nest Invest Ltd (Nest Invest), the investment subsidiary of Nest Corporation.


Nest Invest is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). For the role holder, this means working in a regulated entity, and being required to adhere to certain rules and behaviours included in the FCA’s Code of Conduct (COCON), specifically the individual Conduct Rules defined by the FCA.
