ROLE OVERVIEW //We are recruiting for a qualified lawyer with compliance experience in a City or large national law firm, to join our Legal, Risk and Compliance department as a Compliance Lawyer. This is a permanent, full-time role. The Legal, Risk and Compliance department is headed by the firm’s General Counsel, supported by the firm’s Head of Financial Crime, Head of SRA Regulation and Head of Legal and Risk, and comprises around 30 individuals. This role will directly report into one of these “Head of” roles. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES //The key responsibilities of this role are set out below and there may be others which are not listed. You may be required on occasion to work outside our normal working hours of 9:30am to 5:30pm.To develop and maintain expertise in SRA/other relevant regulation and legislation affecting the firm’s business, forming contacts and networking with regulators, representative bodies and peers in other law firms as appropriate.To keep developments in the compliance field under review and to proactively suggest how the firm’s compliance-related policies and procedures might be improved, and to lead/support projects designed to bring such improvements about.To help partners (and other fee earners) to review clients’ terms and conditions of business and to draft engagement letters. Suggesting improvements to the firm’s own template engagement letters and terms and conditions of business. To assist in devising and maintaining the firm’s policies and procedures, and to develop its standard forms, on all core compliance issues including the regulatory aspects of matters such as: anti-money laundering, sanctions, other aspects of business acceptance risk, conflicts, confidentiality, insider lists, dealing rules, ethical walls, and anti-bribery and corruption. To deal with everyday, “business as usual” queries from fee earners and Business Services staff on a broad range of legal, risk and compliance topics.To support Business Services in procurement exercises including reviewing supplier contracts.To assist the department’s Compliance Services team with queries arising in the course of the firm’s business acceptance processes including client due diligence etc.To support Compliance Services in conducting monitoring exercises to ensure that the firm’s compliance-related policies and procedures are operating as they should and to identify ways in which they might be improved (and/or to supervise other lawyers conducting monitoring exercises).To devise and deliver training internally (at all levels) on all core compliance issues. There are also opportunities to become involved in devising and delivering external training at industry conferences or to the firm’s clients. To assist the Legal, Risk and Compliance team in considering the expanding number of legal, regulatory and risk issues which affect the firm’s businessCANDIDATE PROFILE //Candidates for this position must have:At least 2 years’ post qualified experience as a lawyer.Excellent academic qualifications.Experience of working within a compliance function in a City or large national firm. An understanding of how a law firm is managed and operates.Ability to build trusted relationships with the key stakeholders at all levels, both internally and externally.Excellent legal technical knowledge.Ability to pick up new legal concepts quickly.Ability to make independent judgements.Experience of generating and collating accurate documentation.Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.The highest standards of professional ethics.Excellent facilitation and presentation skills.Ability to work alone or as part of a team without constant supervision.Experience of working in a diverse team, fostering an inclusive team culture.
