NBCFM is an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of National Bank of Canada (“NBC”). The main strategic purpose of NBCFM is to enable the NBC Group (“NBC Group,” meaning National Bank of Canada and all its subsidiaries) to grow and diversify its presence in Europe while allowing for a natural development of its existing business relationships and the establishment of new ones in the European markets.


NBC has over 150 years of history and is currently the 6th largest Canadian bank. Through its branch and subsidiary network, NBC can service clients throughout North America and Europe. NBC’s strategy is to further develop NBCFM as its hub for trading and financial services in Europe.


Summary:


National Bank of Canada / National Bank Financial Inc. London Branch are seeking students in their penultimate or final year of university to take part in a paid internship program. The Intern will gain exposure to various departments across the business within a dynamic, fast-paced environment. The Intern will be expected assist in a variety of projects throughout the London office in addition to contributing to the daily operational support of multiple departments including the Compliance, Fixed Income, DCM, FX, STIR, Treasury, and Institutional Equity business lines. In this role, there will be an opportunity to be part of unique business projects, which will entail intradepartmental coordination, to develop your ICT skills through a wide range of financial software and IT products and work directly with Senior Management across the business.


Sample of Main Responsibilities:


Fixed Income

  • Collaborate with business partners and data providers to integrate various market data sources, enhancing data analytics capabilities.
  • Implement processes to store quality data generated by the trading desk.
  • Build tools to optimize client interactions with our sales team.


FX/STIR

  • FX Forwards: Pricer optimisation, development, and curve construction for new and existing currencies. In addition to optimising our framework for risk visualization and bucketing.
  • XCCY/Arbitrage: Developing tools to monitor and store historic swap spreads to identify optimal timing for engaging in arbitrage trades.


Debt Capital Markets

  • Create SSA New Issue Database and reporting to accompany it – this would link to a variety of reporting – SSA borrowing requirements, SSA share of wallet.
  • Create monthly SSA volumes reporting – visualization with this will be key as well (power BI reports etc).
  • Create SSA New Issue Buyers Database.


Institutional Equity

  • Assist in the production of lists for prospective clients, details including sectors, region, and investment style.
  • Assist in the review and updates of morning note summaries by looking at market data.
  • Prepare and participate in corporate road shows with institutional investors. Produce meeting summaries.


Compliance

  • Support in the testing of the Compliance Monitoring and Risk Assessment Programme.
  • Support the team in timely, accurate transaction reporting to regulatory bodies and reconcile reported data with internal systems for accuracy.
  • Monitor regulatory changes and assist in updating internal processes to maintain compliance.
  • Assist with the maintenance of NBC London’s internal interactive Compliance platform.
  • Support the delivery of reviewing and update policies and procedures.
  • Aid senior management with daily operational tasks.
  • Assist with ad-hoc projects as required.


Skills and Experience:

The Intern will be required to demonstrate an interest and desire to work in Financial Markets.


  • Relevant 3rd level degree.
  • Proficient in Microsoft applications.
  • Strong Numeracy Skills.
  • Strong Python and Excel Skills.
  • Organised – ability to self-manage multiple priorities, identifying and managing urgent matters as they arise.
  • Pro-active – ability to self-start and take initiative to undertake and complete tasks.
  • Quick learner – ability to self-learn, as well as actively seek advice and guidance.
  • Attention to detail – strong attention to the accuracy and delivery of tasks and projects. An ability to identify key tasks and prioritise effective execution.
  • Excellent verbal, written and numeric skills.
  • Ability to communicate and influence key stakeholders.
  • High integrity and keen sense of ethics.
