Purpose of the Job To undertake horticultural work to a high standard with a degree of independence in public parks, playing fields, landscaped areas and similar open spaces, as directed, using a range of horticultural tools, equipment and vehicles. Principal Accountabilities 1. To carry out basic routine horticultural operations e.g. grass cutting and mechanical weed control, in order to contribute to the enhancement of the environment and provide customer satisfaction for visitors and users of the City's outdoor facilities. 2. To assist in more advanced horticultural operations e.g. pruning and planting bedding. 3. To carry out cleansing duties to include litter clearance and cleaning changing rooms. 4. To erect sports equipment and assist with marking out sports pitches. 5. To report disorderly conduct by the public to more senior staff, and provide advice on local bylaws. 6. To assist in site preparation and construction, soft and hard landscaping. 7. To check allocated tools, equipment and machinery before use to ensure it is in good and safe working order and that health and safety considerations are taken into account in its operation, reporting any defects to the team leader. 8. To undertake basic maintenance on grass cutting machinery and vans for example greasing, checking blade condition and reporting any defects to the team leader or fitter. 9. To assist in site preparation and construction of soft and hard landscaping projects. 10. To check that vehicles in use are in a road worthy and fill in drivers vehicle check book and report any defects to the machinery/vehicle workshop. 11. To carry out playground inspections and complete reports to ensure that they are maintained in line with agreed standards. 12. To report any damage caused by bad weather or by public vandalism to the appropriate person to ensure that it is rectified as soon as practicable. Postholders will make areas safe where possible prior to any other work being carried out, i.e. taping it off, removing broken glass etc. 13. To effectively assist higher graded staff with advanced activities when situation demands. General Accountabilities To be prepared to implement the Council's Equalities Policy at all levels appropriate to the job and must at all times carry out his/her duties with due regard to the Council's Equalities Policy. To uphold the Council's and other department's health and safety requirements particularly with regard to agreed codes of practice and safe methods of working. To be responsible for the implementation of, and compliance with, the provisions of legislation relating to health and safety, of such employees and areas of the workplace as fall under direct control of the postholder and for complying with legislation relating to works and contracts as are within the direct responsibility of the postholder.
