What you will do

You will develop complex documents and content strategies for team members. You will work with engineers to understand product functionality, obtain source material and supervise other technical writers to create documentation sets for new JCI products. As an expert in the technical writing field, you will implement standard industry style guides in addition to the JCI house style. You will work with document control and peer review systems and readily adapt to changing work demands and maintain composure under pressure.

How you will do it

This is a role for an experienced technical communicator who will be comfortable supervising and mentoring junior technical writers.

Job Description

  • You must work effectively with peers, share information, demonstrate integrity, and deliver on your commitments.

  • Author and edit technical content.

  • Support Johnson Controls by liaising with engineering staff to develop accurate and clear product content.

  • Coordinate large documentation projects.

  • Mentor and supervise junior technical writers.

  • Follow established procedures and guidelines to produce high-quality content.

  • Create, update, and develop technical content in both PDF, html and other online formats.

  • Continually seek improvement on the structure and delivery of technical content.

  • Adapt readily to changing work demands and solve most issues, though also know when to escalate and seek help.

  • Understand complex information, attend product training and engineering team meetings to build product knowledge, and transform specifications and engineering documentation/illustration into high-quality technical content.

  • Communicate well with all levels of JCI personnel, work effectively with colleagues, and report the status of work regularly.

What we look for

Required

  • Ability to work on site three days per week

  • Master's degree in a writing or technical discipline (or bachelor's degree with relevant experience)

  • Minimum of four years' experience as a technical writer

  • Expertise in creating a variety of outputs including PDFs, web, help files, and other digital media.

  • Excellent understanding of document and revision control

  • Expertise in the use of sophisticated authoring tools to create well-formatted documentation such as Microsoft Word, Oxygen, MadCap Flare, etc.

  • Ability to create raster and vector illustrations with minimal supervision using standard tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Microsoft Visio, etc.

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment is required.

  • Self-motivation, tenacity, flexible and reliable in approach to work

Nice to Have

  • Working knowledge in Security physical access control domain.

  • Experience of using sophisticated Machine Translation technologies.

  • Background in topic-based writing

  • Planning and scheduling skills

  • Project management skills

  • Knowledge of DITA or other XML standards

  • Experience with API documentation

  • Experience working on global team
