Principal Physiotherapist - Respiratory

The Acute Cardio-Respiratory 8a PT is responsible for the clinical leadership and operational management of 25.4 WTE's, across 15 clinical areas. The post holder has 4.4 WTE direct reports and clinical responsibility for staff providing respiratory care out of hours / weekends across the hospital (84 additional staff). Main duties of the job The post holder will assess and treat their own complex workload of patients and maintain associated patient records utilising knowledge and skills gained through attainment of competencies, experience and relevant qualifications. The post holder is responsible for the operational management of the cardio-respiratory physiotherapy team, ensuring delivery of high quality person centred acute cardio respiratory physiotherapy and acute rehabilitation including step down from critical care measured by clinical outcomes, patient experience and patient safety measures. The post holder is integral to the delivery of effective and safe patient flow through the hospital by leading on high quality acute assessment and rehabilitation pathways, supporting the MDT team with timely patient discharge across the clinical areas of critical care, surgery, renal and specialist medicine including the heart failure unit, ADU and respiratory wards. The post holder supervises, initiates and participate in evidence-based quality improvement projects and national audits including recommendations for change in practice. The post holder will participate in the 7 day acute respiratory service across the acute site including night time on calls. The post holder works closely with the Community Respiratory Physiotherapy Team Lead strengthening pathways for patients with respiratory disease across the acute and community interface. Post registration training in respiratory physiotherapy and management Commitment to advanced clinical professional development Desirable   Post graduate qualification e.g. MSc Respiratory Physiology Membership of a special interest group Member of relevant appropriate multi professional interest group e.g. BTS Experience Essential     Minimum 6 years post registration respiratory experience Minimum 3 years at Band 7 level experience of working in respiratory physiotherapy, including management of critically ill patients. Expert knowledge & experience of a wide range of approaches to the management of patients across several respiratory specialities including critical care settings, demonstrated by advanced clinical reasoning. Expert level of knowledge in the application of all respiratory modalities including invasive and non-invasive respiratory support Expert level of knowledge of tracheostomy management including development of weaning strategies Previous experience of student supervision and clinical education Previous experience of formal presentations to multi professional groups Evidence of continued professional development, reviewing current practise and research developments within respiratory care and trauma, with application to clinical practise Robust understanding of research methodology Demonstrated understanding of the role of physiotherapy within the evolving health environment Clear understanding of other disciplines' roles and expectations Robust understanding of all aspects of Clinical Governance including previous experience of quality issues, audit, and risk management Desirable     Previous experience as a clinical specialist physiotherapist (or equivalent ) in a teaching hospital environment Actively involved in developing research links with other academic institutions Actively involved in teaching specialisms / extended scope to the multi-disciplinary team.
