An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Policy & Standards Engineer to join our System Engineering Team within the Engineering directorate. Driving delivery of engineering and environmental policy, standards and improvement plans for a reliable and resilient network, System Engineering is core to a successful Net Zero. We are a diverse team, creating a smarter, more flexible electricity distribution network that will enable our region to decarbonise and meet the needs of our customers now, and in the future.


This is an exciting opportunity to work at the leading edge of thinking in the electricity industry, at a time when it is on the path to net zero. In this role we are seeking a motivated individual to join our team responsible for developing policies and strategies for the management of network goods across their entire lifecycle. This includes overseeing the specification, assessment, commissioning, maintenance, and refurbishment or replacement of critical assets.


The successful candidate will focus on distribution plant and equipment, specifically transformers, switchgear, secondary remote-control systems, and tripping battery and charger systems. These efforts will ensure the effective and efficient operation of these assets, contributing to the overall reliability and safety of the network.

Key Responsibilities


The successful candidate will be accountable for:


  • Development and appraisal of asset policies and strategies that serve existing and future business needs;
  • Analysis of future asset refurbishment/replacement investment requirements;
  • Development and review of internal technical specifications, standards and method statements;
  • Production of detailed technical reports on product assessments, product failures and technical innovation;
  • Provision of detailed advice on technical products to internal customers and providing effective liaison with suppliers;
  • Undertake product defect and failure investigations, supplier Quality Assurance inspections of manufacturing premises, and new product evaluations, and, Company representation on national standards bodies and awareness of relevant National, International and company standards.


Skills/Main Competencies


  • A detailed knowledge of distribution transformers and switchgear with an awareness and willingness to develop in the areas of remote control and ancillary plant and equipment such as battery and charger systems.
  • Team working

  • Able to deliver quality outputs to required deadlines
  • Excellent verbal and written skills
  • IT literate


Qualifications and Attributes

Essential Qualifications and Experience


  • Level 4 qualification in an engineering discipline.
  • A knowledge of distribution network products, particularly the components that form the distribution network.


Desirable Qualifications and Experience


  • Level 5 or 6 qualification in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Professional membership and/or Chartered /working towards Chartered status.


It would be advantageous to have experience in one or more of these areas:


  • SCADA, Remote control, batteries and chargers
  • Engineering policy/strategy development;
  • Asset management systems;
  • Commercial relationships;
  • Supply chain knowledge;
  • Product specification development, or,
  • Quality assurance auditing.
