Head of Science – Lambeth – January 2025 Role: Head of Science Responsible to: Deputy Headteacher Pay scale: ILPS + TLR1d Work pattern: Full-time, Permanent Required for: January or April 2025 Location of post: Lambeth, South London We are looking to appoint an inspirational and enthusiastic Head of Science who has a passion for his or her subject and a commitment to ensuring that staff and students share that passion. We want you to lead a team to inspire the next generation of young scientists and have the ability to drive forward that vision for your department. We want a candidate who is going to take us to the next level of excellence at KS3, KS4 and KS5. Head of Science Key Responsibilities • The purpose of this role is to provide professional leadership and management for Science, ensuring high quality teaching and learning, achievement and engagement of students in line with our vision and ethos. • Responsible for: Heads of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Lead Science Technician, and the departmental staff team. • Strategic Direction and Planning of Science • To provide professional leadership for the department • Lead curriculum development for the department in line with national initiatives and supporting the aims of the school • Develop and implement policies and practices which reflect the school’s commitment to high achievement and effective teaching and learning HEAD OF SCIENCE ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE ? Proven excellence as a classroom practitioner ? Teaching across the age and ability range ? Leadership of an aspect of the Science department ? Ability to function as an effective member of a team ? Evidence of successful experience of raising standards ? Effective approach to behaviour management ? Personnel management HEAD OF SCIENCE DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE ? Development and recruitment of staff ? Policy development ? Initiation of change HEAD OF SCIENCE QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING ? Graduate specialist with qualified teacher status ? Evidence of continuing professional development, providing balanced and relevant preparation for subject leader role ? Awareness and understanding of key national issues which affect Science HEAD OF SCIENCE SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES ? The ability to lead, manage, motivate and promote effective relationships ? Ability to foster an efficient, positive, happy department ? Excellent communication skills verbally and in writing ? Sensitivity to empathy with the needs of others ? Commitment to quality and professionalism ? Personal integrity ? Commitment to high standards and high expectations for both colleagues and students ? Resilience and the ability, under pressure, to manage stress levels and to maintain professionally detached and balanced judgement ?
