We're looking for two exceptional Product Managers to help us make a difference to our planet.

As our Product Manager, the job may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in the office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and the location advertised will be your contractual place of work.

Our opportunities are both available full time, 37 hours per week, but we would also consider applicants wishing to work a minimum of 30 hours per week for the Hazards and Resilience Product Manager role. Your world of expertise

We are looking for two experienced, enthusiastic and driven Product Managers to join our Product Management team. You will be responsible for product owner and product management tasks for key underpinning products and services within our Services Directorate.

  • As Product Manager in Observations, you will be responsible for leading and improving the long-term lifecycling of our lightning detection system LEELA as well as other key Observation systems and capabilities.
  • As Product Manager in Hazards and Resilience, you will be responsible for leading the refresh and long-term lifecycling of one of our key emergency responder tools.

Product Management is an established profession within the Met Office with an active Community of Practice group offering support and best practice. We're a supportive and proactive team and work together to develop Product Management skills aligned to the Government Digital and Data framework.

Your key duties

  • Maximise the value delivered, taking into account the balance between aligning to business strategy, delivering customer contracts and responding to end user needs.
  • Develop, own and communicate a product vision and roadmap based on customer, stakeholder and user needs.
  • Identify and manage development dependencies on other directly or indirectly related systems or products.
  • Apply Government Digital Service (GDS) service standards and guidance to ways of working to ensure our public digital services are meeting government standards and appropriately apply GDS standards to those services which are not openly available to the public.

As our Product Manager, your total reward package will be up to £57,639 annually, which includes:

  • £41,725 base pay
  • An outstanding Civil Service pension, with an average employer contribution of 27%
  • Annual Leave starting at 27.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) after 5 years and option to buy or sell up to 5 days per year of annual leave

Essential Criteria, skills and experience:


  • You're an expert by nature with a strong understanding of the agile software development lifecycle, and preferably, proven experience in managing product lifecycles.
  • You keep evolving with practical experience of user/customer research methods, the ability to gather analyse, prioritise customers' requirements and evaluate these against business needs.
  • Proven experience of working better together in multi-faceted teams, with evidence of strong communication skills including influencing and negotiating.
  • You're a force for good with a track record of taking ownership for key projects and delivering them within a given timeline; recognising when to escalate risks to support decision making.
  • You live and breathe it by demonstrating a strong user/customer focus with experience building trusted relationships and using that to improve products or services.
