Senior Lawyer

Are you a skilled legal professional looking for a unique opportunity to work in an exciting and evolving sector? The Gambling Commission is seeking a talented Senior Lawyer to join our in-house legal team, working collaboratively with others, providing solution-focused legal advice across a wide range of complex and impactful cases.
This is an opportunity to advise and provide legal support on a wide range of matters, which range in complexity and you will deal with a varied and complex caseload. You will be able to work independently and take responsibility for the advice you give, whilst managing and supporting junior colleagues.

You will play a leading role in providing advice to the Commission on its powers, requiring creativity and innovation in advising on the options and finding available routes to help the Commission to be more effective.
You will handle an exciting and varied caseload covering areas such as:
- Gambling law
- Prosecutions
- Regulatory and licensing matters
- Administrative and public law, including litigation and judicial reviews
- Contract and procurement law
- National Lottery
- Employment law
- Freedom of information, data protection, and GDPR matters
You will carry a complex and diverse regulatory caseload, consisting of enforcement and licensing cases, and will be expected to take the lead on advising and preparing cases for court and tribunal hearings.
You will deliver at pace solution focused legal advice and have previous experience carrying out legal research and providing well-reasoned advice to clients on a variety of matters. You will attend key decision-making meetings in an advisory capacity.
You will also be expected to provide leadership and guidance to junior team members, whilst helping guide the team toward overall success.

About You:
Were looking for a proactive, creative legal mind who can work independently while being an integral part of our team.
The ideal candidate will be a team player who is pragmatic and able to assist in maintaining excellent working relationships with stakeholders and senior members of the Commission, as well as the Commissions external solicitors and counsel, to deliver value for money. Your ability to find innovative solutions within the regulatory framework will be key in making the Commission more effective.
Essential:
- Qualified solicitor, barrister, or Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives, with a current practicing certificate in England and Wales.
- At least five years PQE with proven relevant experience advising in public law
- The ability to communicate complex legal issues to a wide range of audiences, including Executives and Commissioners
- Managing your own varied caseload of both advisory and litigation matters ranging in complexity and size
- Proven leadership skills and personal qualities to support, motivate, and develop staff and contribute to the corporate leadership of the Commission
- Strong intellectual and analytical abilities, paired with sound judgement, including the appreciation of legal risk
Desirable:
- Experience in procurement, employment and/or information law
- Post-qualification experience as in-house lawyer in a government department or regulator
- The motivation to contribute to the leadership of the Commission, including contributing to the management of the Legal Team

Set up under the Gambling Act 2005, the Gambling Commission is committed to safeguarding the public against any detrimental impact brought about by gambling. We do this by keeping crime out, protecting children and vulnerable people and ensuring the commercial gambling industry is run fairly and openly. We work with the legal system, the public health system, community groups and the industry itself to understand how we can protect the interests of as many people as possible, as effectively as possible.
