Bernadette is the digital experience arm of the VCCP Group. We invent, make and iterate digital experiences, tools and products for our clients across all areas of their digital ecosystem. We are 100 strong and are full service within our own right. We have specialists across UX, UI Design and Motion, Technology & Engineering, Content and Comms, Project Management, Data Analysis, Strategy and Ops. All dedicated to creating customer experiences worth talking about.
The VCCP Group as a whole is an integrated communications network, that defines itself as the Challenger Agency for Challenger Brands. Set up in 2002 by Charles (V), Rooney (C), Adrian (C) and Ian (P), who founded the agency on the principles of simplicity, collaboration, un-preciousness and integration around ideas rather than channels.

ABOUT THE ROLE: UX Director is a leading role within our design team, helping to lead high-profile projects and set direction for others to follow. The UX Director at Bernadette must be able to lead and inspire others - clients and colleagues alike. Be a practitioner of strategic thinking, a highly experienced designer and researcher, and have excellent client service skills. We look for those who are proactive at collaborating with others and responsible for driving outcomes and delivering high quality outputs.
Working at Bernadette would involve a wide variety of challenges - so we’re looking for people who love to experiment, try new things and adapt quickly to new situations. The role includes working very closely with cross discipline teams. We need people who can get the best out of others and understand what it means to be client-facing.
This role involves both leading projects with Junior, Mid-weight and/or Senior talent across UX, UI and Copywriting. The role also involves producing work - particularly work that shapes the project like key presentations and running workshops - and being an expert voice in the field of UX and Product Design. People in this role need to be able to handle working on multiple projects simultaneously, and know how to make prioritisation calls as key milestones come up on the various projects they are leading. This role involves mentorship and leadership of designers who are more junior - whilst making sure that our work is always meeting our high quality standards. On occasion, this could mean stepping in if the work is falling short.
This UX Director role is supported by the Chief Design Officer. Directors are expected to help support and mentor the more junior members of the team - creating a support network within our team. This role also plays a key part in shaping the direction of the UX and Product Design discipline at Bernadette and should actively contribute with ideas for better ways of working, ways to motivate the team, and ways to keep our standards at the high level we expect.
We love learning at Bernadette - and there is plenty of room to learn and grow in this role. From starting to take on the leadership of large projects through to contributing to and presenting in new business pitches and hosting high-profile presentations, we support all of our team to progress in their careers.
TYPES OF ACTIVITIES YOU’LL BE LEADING: Workshops & presentations Helping to design and run workshops Presenting research, findings and recommendations Research and analysis Analysis of existing client documentation and research Heuristic reviews of existing products and services Competitor and out of category desk research Working within VCCP to obtain wider insight (eg. analytics, SEO, Global Web Index data) Management of primary research with customers Supporting strategy development Development of customer personas to inform design Creating a summaries of research findings Creating UX hypotheses to inform strategy Experience design Ideation - working with other disciplines to develop experience concepts Designing and delivering prototypes, wireframes and user journeys Supporting feature prioritisation Planning, conducting and analysing of user testing and research Contributing to and presenting in pitches
WHAT YOU NEED: Experience leading projects and more junior members of the team Experience leading multiple projects at the same time Experience designing project approaches and ways of working, creating proposals for new projects to share with clients Be able to demonstrate and show examples of a range of UX deliverables and outputs Evangelise the importance of user-centred design, mobile-first and responsive design, accessibility and inclusive design Lots of experience liaising with client stakeholders Experience planning, preparing and hosting client-facing workshops Have experience of conducting remote moderated and unmoderated user testing Be comfortable working with Agile frameworks (specifically Kanban and Sprint) Demonstrate proficiency with design and prototyping tools for rapid, iterative prototyping (although only basic skill level required for this role as more junior members of the team will be doing the majority of this work) Have a strong understanding of and ability to articulate and implement UX strategy Working collaboratively with Strategy, Research, UI Design, Dev and client stakeholders. Great presentation skills with the ability to present UX recommendations in a concise, compelling and clear way Have experience working on and presenting in pitches
SOFTWARE SKILLS: Figma Google Suite Miro (or other whiteboard tools) Testing platforms, and other research and testing tools
