Job description - the role

AMS is the world's leading provider of Talent Acquisition and Management Services. Our contingent Workforce Solutions (CWS) service acts as an extension of our clients' recruitment team and provides professional interim and temporary resources. We partner with Arup to support contingent recruitment processes. On behalf of Arup, we are looking for a Health and Safety Project Specialist for a 3 month contract based in London.

Candidate Profile: Key accountabilities, skills & experience

The Health and Safety Project Specialist will provide general and specialist health and safety advice. Supporting Arup's project teams establishing effective H&S arrangements on projects and ensuring compliance with contractual and regulatory duties, such as the CDM Regulations, the Building Regulations and the Building Safety Act.

The role

  • Technical Advice: Acting as a specialist technical H&S advisor, assisting Arup's project teams understand and address design and project-related risks through the provision of H&S expertise. This will apply H&S best practice and the Principles of Prevention.
  • Guide and Support: Support Arup's project teams establish appropriate health and safety arrangements for projects, including health and safety plans, procedures and systems. This may involve secondment to projects. Provides technical H&S input into new bid opportunities, enabling project teams to identify and establish appropriate H&S resourcing.
  • Enable Compliance: Provision of design health and safety support and risk management services to ensure compliance with duties imposed by CDM Regulations 2015, the Building Regulations (as amended), and the Building Safety Act 2024. This will include supporting Arup with the selection, appointment and training of Principle Designer and Safety by Design Advisors on projects, including the provision of internal training for Designers.
  • Safety Planning: Prepare, implement, and review H&S processes and deliverables including PCIP, Design Management Plan, H&S Files, Designers risk register, project method statements, risk and assessment and H&S frameworks to ensure safe systems of work are established, communicated and implemented.
  • Communicate: Establish effective H&S communication processes for projects. This will include planning, organising and leading project H&S meetings and briefings.
  • Checking: Establish and implement assurance programmes for projects, including conducting H&S audits and inspections to ensure safe working practices are followed, and ensuring corrective actions are closed out. This will include the completion of CDM (safe by design) audits to ensure compliance.
  • Manage Contractor Risks: Establish effective processes to manage the H&S risks arising from the appointment of sub-contractors/consultants on projects, including the checking and assurance processes.

Experience

  • Delivery of a broad range of CDM/H&S related advice with substantial design risk experience in construction and infrastructure-related disciplines.
  • Relevant industry experience and technical expertise in Construction, Built Environment and/or Infrastructure development within a business support environment.
  • Conversant with ISO 45001, 14001 and 9001, BS 8670 and associated standards and PAS.
  • NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety or Health and Safety Management.
  • Chartered professional, or seeking chartered status (e.g., CMIOSH, CMaPS or chartered engineer).
  • Proven working knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, codes of practice, and guidelines.
