Position: Special Educational Needs Coordinator Location: Feltham, West London Salary: £49,000 - £55,000 Type: Permanent The Role To promote and support the progress and achievement of SEND students throughout the school. This role will be student-focused and will ensure high standards and expectations for both SEND students and staff Main Duties and Responsibilities o To manage learner support ensuring that the special educational needs of young people in custody are identified and assessed. Overseeing the effective delivery of appropriate learning and support programmes in line with the SEND code of practice o Work and monitor planned support of young people, across all educational areas according to their individual learning needs so that any barriers to learning are overcome and, in particular, their literacy and numeracy skills are enhanced. Support specific reading scheme implementation o Assessing the specific educational needs of children with learning disabilities and providing recommendations for their support o Identify and adopt the most effective teaching approaches for students with Special Educational Needs o Work with classroom teachers, the school leadership team, parents and relevant external agencies to develop, implement and monitor individual support/learning plans. Provide advice and training to classroom teachers on supporting pupils with SEN and offer further guidance if needed o Meet with and build rapports with the pupils to set personalised education, health and care (EHC) plans, which include social and academic targets o Make referrals and liaise with professionals outside of the school within local authorities and health care services, including psychologists, speech and language therapists and occupational therapists o Develop and maintain systems for keeping pupil records, ensuring information is accurate and up to date o Analyse school, local and national data and develop appropriate strategies and interventions o Keep up to date with national and local policies including the code of practice related to SEN and cascade information to colleagues. o To provide lessons for individuals and groups where learners are unable to access normal regime activities due to additional support needs or other issues e.g. security. o Monitor the support and entitlement programme for learners, including induction, tutorial support, enrichment and additional learning support, to meet individual student needs. o Effectively manage and performance manage Learning Support Assistants to meet the needs of our learners with SEND. o Support the planning of lesson observations. o Support the implementation of improvement strategies resulting from learner surveys. o There is a requirement to undertake teaching as part of this management role; timetabled teaching sessions and cover as required o Ensure that vulnerable young people are safeguarded in their learning Skills & Experience o DfES qualified teacher status Degree level qualification o Possession of or working towards the NASENCo or equivalent qualification o Prepared to undertake relevant training, including accredited courses o Any courses undertaken from the Youth Justice National Learning and Skills Framework or similar. (Desirable but will accept agreement to enrol on a relevant course upon recruitment) o Demonstrable evidence of Continuing Professional Development o Proven successful teaching experience o Experience of supporting young people in an education setting in overcoming barriers to learning o Awareness of curricula and pedagogical issues relating to literacy and numeracy o Experience of engaging young people in learning who have been disconnected from education o Experience of working within a secure setting o Evidence of understanding the Youth Justice System o Demonstrable track record of managing a team o Demonstrates a passion to further the charitable aims of the organisation and acts with integrity
