Job Title: Site Engineer
Function: Construction Team
Reports to: Section Engineer
Location: Birmingham



Role Purpose


The Site Engineer will be responsible for engineering control and overseeing the implementation of site works on the HS2 project. This includes monitoring and reporting progress, ensuring health and safety standards, and maintaining accurate project documentation.



Dimensions


Financial:

  • Collection of data through on-site records (e.g., daily diaries, photographs, file notes).
  • Monitoring the budget, including labor and plant usage within their section.


Organizational:

  • Collaborates with Assistant Engineers, Site Engineers, and Section Engineers.


Interfaces


Internal: Operations Team, Health and Safety Team, Commercial Team
External: Subcontractors, occasional interface with the Client



Accountabilities

Core Responsibilities

  • Uphold and live the project values.
  • Actively support the delivery of sustainability initiatives.


Health, Safety & Environmental

  • Produce Task Briefing Sheets and ensure briefings are delivered to the workforce.
  • Contribute to and produce Permit to Dig documents, ensuring the workforce is briefed accordingly.
  • Carry out safety inspections and hazard identification.
  • Participate in developing Safe Systems of Work (SSoW).


Engineering Control

  • Set out works using primary control provided by others.
  • Provide sketches with setting out information.
  • Maintain and test survey equipment, ensuring accurate documentation.
  • Interpret drawings, schedules, and specifications to ensure works are executed as planned.


Quality Control

  • Produce as-built drawings and records for all elements of the work.
  • Complete Quality Check Sheets and compile information for Handover Documentation.
  • Maintain accurate daily records, including diaries, photographs, and site discussions.


Productivity

  • Measure actual material usage and reconcile with theoretical quantities.
  • Work according to the weekly programme and track progress.
  • Contribute to collecting data for Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), providing reasons for any variances.


Commercial Responsibilities

  • Maintain a detailed daily diary documenting labor, plant, materials, subcontractors, and outputs.
  • Produce weekly measurements and take-offs, accurately scheduling materials.
  • Identify and record any additional works and understand their impact on the budget.
  • Monitor resourcing levels versus the budget and report reasons for any discrepancies.


Experience/Criteria Required

Core Requirements

  • Strong understanding of Safe Systems of Work (SSoW) and ability to communicate them effectively.
  • Ability to take ownership of tasks and communicate clear outcomes.
  • Flexible work ethic, including availability to work unsociable hours or night shifts as needed.
  • Capable of working independently and seeking out opportunities in line with responsibilities.
  • Holds a current driving license and a valid CSCS Card.
  • Excellent team player with developed communication skills.


Health, Safety & Environmental

  • Working knowledge of the Permit to Dig system and appointment as an Authorized Engineer.
  • Awareness of environmental considerations related to site activities.


Engineering Control

  • Proficient in setting out techniques, including the use of levels, EDM, and GPS equipment.
  • Capable of identifying and reporting issues with control and information provided.


Quality

  • Skilled in reading and interpreting drawings and schedules.
  • Familiar with Activity Control Plans and the production of documentation for handover.
  • Strong understanding of construction tolerances and use of specifications.


Productivity

  • Capable of accurately taking off and scheduling material quantities.


Commercial

  • Knowledge of specification and contract documents.
  • Understands what constitutes additional work and can record it accordingly.


Desirable Qualities

  • Emerging leadership skills.
  • Targeting progression toward professional accreditation (e.g., ICE, IHT).
