Lawyer (Employment and Tribunals) Location: Ealing Salary: £49,083.00 - £57,201.00 per annum inclusive. Grade 12-14 Are you an employment lawyer looking for a new challenge? Our client is a highly regarded in-house department looking to expand by recruiting an employment lawyer to join their busy and friendly team. The Role The main focus of the role is to provide legal advice to officers, councillors and maintained schools on a diverse range of employment matters including litigation, TUPE issues, settlement agreements and internal policy and procedure. You will report to the senior lawyer and will manage and prioritise your own caseload, including conducting advocacy where appropriate. You will be a practising solicitor, barrister or legal executive or hold the equivalent position in another jurisdiction that specialises in employment law of England and Wales. The successful candidate will also be expected to advise and represent the Council in the Special Education Needs and Disability Tribunal. Experience of this area and also working in a local authority environment is preferred but not essential as full training will be provided. Key Responsibilities * To give legal advice on and prepare complex and straightforward documentation relating to employment or staffing matters and assist in the development of policy; * Conduct straightforward and complex litigation matters, including evaluation of evidence, case preparation and advocacy * To attend committees, employee appeals panels or other meetings with members and/or officers as required and advise on procedural and legal issues; * To instruct Counsel as necessary, arrange case conferences and attend to Counsel at hearings as required; * To manage case work effectively and in accordance with departmental procedures and advise on strategic case management with a view to cost effectiveness; * To represent the Council in meetings with other authorities, government departments and other bodies; * To contribute to and provide legal advice on reports prepared for cabinet, council and other committees; * To keep up to date with changes in the law and legal practice, and bring this to the attention of relevant client departments Skills and Qualifications * The post holder must be an admitted solicitor, barrister or legal executive or hold an equivalent qualification from another jurisdiction * Knowledge and understanding of law and procedure relating to employment matters. * Knowledge, or ability to develop knowledge, of law and procedure relating to Special Educational Needs and Disability Tribunal. * Ability to obtain and evaluate evidence, prepare cases and appear as advocate on behalf of the Council (and other clients) before courts, tribunals and other bodies, in both defended and undefended cases. * A clear and systematic approach to problem solving, including the ability to research new law and policy and to apply that research to meet the client’s needs. * Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with non-lawyers and with lawyers. * With appropriate supervision, ability to advise members at meetings/hearings and give advice on matters of law and procedure. * Ability and willingness to contribute to the continuous improvement of Legal Services. * Ability and willingness to attend tribunals/courts and meetings outside Perceval House. * Competent ICT skills including basic keyboard skills, familiarity with word processing packages, case management systems and simple databases or ability to acquire the same to maximise the use of these systems in support of the work of the team. * Ability to provide a consistent and fair approach towards members of the public and Council employees in accordance with Council policies.
