New Business & Partnerships Manager

Up to £70,832 plus excellent benefits (depending on experience)

Walsall, West Midlands – Hybrid working – Minimum two days in office


We are delighted to be working exclusive with WHG in their search for a New Business & Partnerships Manager.


WHG are bold and ambitious - and proud to admit it. WHG have gone through a significant period of growth and change, building over 500 new homes in the last financial year. WHG are looking for someone as brilliant as you to source new development opportunities and create strong new partnership opportunities, whilst building on existing relationships.


This position is responsible for establishing and managing partnerships, along with securing new business, to support WHG's transformational theme ‘Making Places’ in their new 2030 plan and the objectives of the Development and Regeneration Strategy. Such partnerships will lead to new development schemes which provide great places and funding / deal type innovations, enhancing housing delivery across WHG's 350 home a year programme.


This post will lead on the creation of new partnerships with the public and private sector, seeking to deliver whg’s objective of being a ‘partner of choice’ and delivering agreed place based and commercial outcomes. You will lead on liaison with local authorities, NHS trusts and other public sector bodies. You will play a key role in WHS's relationship management of the West Midlands Combined Authority and identifying private partners who share the same ethos and values as whg.


An entrepreneurial spirit, blended with strong commercial acumen, negotiation skills, extensive risk management knowledge, and a can-do attitude with excellent collaboration skills are essential to succeed in this role.


What are my key responsibilities:


  • To create and manage a partnerships framework which delivers whg’s ambition to be partner of choice, across its operating area.
  • To lead and be responsible for liaison with agreed target local authorities and other public sector organisations, creating opportunities for site acquisitions, package deals and s106s and supporting the sourcing of public subsidy (as required) for the development thereof.
  • To foster existing private sector partnerships, delivering excellence and ensuring great governance. Explore all opportunities for new private sector partnerships and critically evaluating which ones whg should pursue and gain approval accordingly.
  • To evaluate the quality of potential development opportunities in line with whg’s Development and Regeneration Strategy, Land & Property Acquisition Framework and formal bid management processes, seeking approval from the relevant Group Board or committee.
  • Assess scheme potential and bring forward partnership schemes in accordance with internal procedures and financial regulations. Manage the detailed delivery of a portfolio of such schemes, from inception to start on site, and then maintain oversight throughout the construction phase to scheme completion and handover.
  • Demonstrate awareness of current and future market conditions/trends and construction and development opportunities, including willingness to consider, evaluate, and recommend direction for WHG to follow to drive development related growth.
  • Develop innovative joint venture partnerships to support the delivery of the development programme.


Relationships:


  • You will report to the Assistant Director of New Business and Partnerships.
  • You will have an established network of contacts outside of whg, for example with land agents, public sector landowners, planners, and a commercial peer group.
  • You are required to support and engage with various parts of the organisation, working across teams and at various levels. You will manage extensive external relationships, including with contractors and consultants.


Role Requirements:


In order to be successful in this role, you will need:


  • Experience of formulating and managing successful partnerships.
  • Understanding of public funding routes and the compliance and audit framework thereof.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit and sound commercial mindset, embracing change, and comfortable making difficult decisions in an ambiguous environment.
  • To assess and report on commercial aspects of project performance and escalate as appropriate to secure new opportunities.
  • Experience of assessing scheme viability and risk issues with a strong commercial awareness of maximising scheme profitability or levering in relevant grant funding streams. Experience of SDS Proval & Sequel would be advantageous.
  • Knowledge of the operating environment and changing market conditions and sensitivities.
  • Exceptional negotiating and influencing skills – identifying where competitive advantage can be sought.
  • Highly motivated with the ability to handle pressure, working on a multifaceted workload, whilst working diligently within our processes, procedures and governance framework.
  • The ability to communicate clearly and effectively and produce clear and concise reports.
  • The ability and tenacity required to challenge constructively and to ensure that recommendations are clear, appropriate, and backed up with a clear benefits case.
  • Strong project management skills and experienced in negotiating Heads of Terms and legal contracts.
  • Strong networker, who can generate and manage a large workload; be flexible and creative.
  • To provide flexible support to the Assistant Directors and Director of Development and Regeneration and deputise as required.
  • Preferably, degree in related discipline and RICS
