PROJECT SUPPORT MANAGER

Grade: UKRI Pay Band E

Salary: £43,116 per annum

Contract Type: Permanent

Hours: Full-time 37 hours a week (some flexible working options may be available, including a small amount of remote working, in line with BGS policy)

About the role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and enthusiastic candidate to join the BGS Finance and Project Support function as the Project Support Manager.

This role has responsibility for the effective leadership, management and operation of the Project Support Team (eight staff based in Keyworth and Edinburgh) as well as the corporate Resource Management System (RMS). This is a very important time for the Finance and Project Support teams as work is being scoped for a replacement to RMS and we will also be implementing the SHARP Programme (and Oracle Fusion system) in 2025. Your key responsibilities/duties will include:

Being heavily involved in the work to explore a replacement for RMS, which will include working closely with colleagues in Finance, the Project Management Office (PMO), Business Development and the BGS Challenge areas.

Acting as a role model to members of the Project Support team by promoting a team-based culture, and motivating employees to deliver consistently high levels of performance and continuous improvement.

Working closely with the Head of the PMO to review how projects are being run across BGS and taking ownership for RMS/resource management related areas to identify any issues and recommendations for improvements.

Promoting standard process in project resource management across BGS with key customers including Challenge Programme Managers and Chief Scientists.

Working closely with the Finance team, to take the lead for Project Support in all BGS corporate planning, budget setting, medium term financial planning and end of year activities.

Analysis of reports and information to resolve issues, underlying causes and identify remedial actions.

About you

We are looking for candidates with good experience of managing staff along with the ability to improve / develop new processes and policies.

You will hold a project management qualification or be working towards one with significant experience in project support or project manager roles.

Also important is experience of working at a high level with a resource management system.

You will be expected to travel to other BGS and UKRI sites and this will include occasional overnight stays.

The additional specific essential and desirable skills criteria for this post will be assessed at Shortlist (S) stage, interview (I) stage, or both (S&I).

Essential

Project management qualification with good post qualification experience, or, Working to project management qualifications with significant experience in project support / manager roles (S&I)

Significant experience of working at a high level with a computerised resource management system (S&I)

Strong experience of leadership, staff management and development (S&I)

Ability to take ownership of own and teams performance to achieve BGS strategic outcomes to expected timescales (S&I)

Ability to build excellent working relationships with colleagues at all levels of the organisation and with external collaborators (S&I)

Excellent written and verbal communication skills including the presentation of complex information to customers at all levels (S&I)

Experience of using Microsoft Excel to at least intermediate level to manipulate and analyse large and complex data sets (S&I)

Ability to improve and develop new processes and policies to enable effective resource management (S&I)

You will be committed to a diverse and inclusive approach to work in the geosciences (S&I)

Desirable

Strong evidence of managing your own Continuing Professional Development (S)

Experience working in not for profit and/or science research organisations (S)

Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (complex formulas, pivot tables, advanced charting, conditional formatting, data validation and advanced filtering techniques) (S&I)
