To, on occasion, take charge of the home in the absence of the Charge Nurse/Sister and Home Manager Specific Duties and Responsibilities General Management and Personnel Contribute to the planning of the care staff duty rota and ensure that at all times suitably qualified, competent and experienced persons are working at the home in sufficient numbers to meet the needs of patients and the delivery of the service. Provide leadership, guidance and support to all grades of staff. Ensure all subordinate staff contribute effectively to the running of the home and to the delivery of a service which is in the best interests of the patients. Comply with the requirements of the Data Protection Act and maintain strict confidentiality in respect of patient and staff records. Health and Safety Adhere to the Company Health and Safety Policies, and ensure all subordinate staff practice is in accordance with these policies. Ensure appropriate delegation of duties within employees sphere of competence. Ensure high standards of cleanliness and infection control. Ensure that all equipment is used correctly and safely in accordance with manufacturers instructions and that all faulty equipment is immobilised and repaired as soon as possible. Ensure that all staff are familiar with the Fire Evacuation Procedure. Ensure compliance with the COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) regulations. Ensure all serious accidents and incidents are reported to the appropriate professional bodies. Strictly monitor the behaviour of subordinate staff to ensure compliance with all Employment Legislation and Company Policies. Care Delivery Be responsible for the delivery of care within the assigned clinical area and promote continual quality improvement and implementation of evidence-based practice. Assess skill mix and team structures and implement changes in working practices accordingly, ensuring that care processes and systems support the delivery of high quality patient care. Supervise the practice of staff, and organise the work of care and/or ancillary staff taking corrective action when necessary. Ensure that the day-to-day tasks and routines are carried out to contribute to the smooth running of the home as a whole. Ensure that the management of medicines is in accordance with the homes policy and the requirements of the Department of Health and Social Services and RQIA. Ensure a pre-admission assessment is available and has been reviewed prior to admission of a new patient. Ensure all patients have an up to date risk assessment, needs assessment and plan of care which is regularly reviewed. Ensure all necessary records are maintained in accordance with the legislation and professional standards for record keeping. Contribute to care management reviews and take appropriate action on any issues raised. Monitor the nutritional content, presentation and suitability of all meals provided to patients. Ensure at all times the appropriate and efficient use of resources and monitor staff practice in this regard. Training and Professional Development Remain personally up-to-date with current developments in all relevant aspects of care delivery. Provide a learning environment for all nursing staff including student nurses. Take an active role in facilitating the training of staff by participating in orientation and training programmes for staff. Participate in the induction of newly recruited care and nursing staff. Maximise individuals skills and expertise to ensure individual and team development. Implement a system of staff supervision and ensure appropriate records of same are maintained. Act as a staff mentor and participate and contribute to the preceptorship of newly qualified nurses. Empower and facilitate others to learn, with a view to succession planning. Communication/Marketing Meet and speak with patients and their representatives on an ongoing basis. Participate in staff, patient and patient representative meetings. Participate daily in the staff handover and comply with internal communication processes. Establish good working relationships with members of the Multi Disciplinary Team. Establish a collaborative working relationship with the RQIA. Proactively market the home and promote a positive professional profile. Ensure the home is at all times presented to a high standard of cleanliness and that ongoing maintenance is carried out. Endeavour to attend all social events hosted by the Home. Quality Assurance Be involved in the monitoring of the quality of care and service being delivered. Implement the company complaints policy and participate in any complaint investigation. Take appropriate action to address shortcomings and issues raised. The Staff Nurse will fulfil any other reasonable duties as may be deemed necessary by the Sister/Charge Nurse, Home Manager and/or Registered Provider. PERSON SPECIFICATION STAFF NURSE Essential Criteria To be a Registered Nurse on the live NMC Register with mental health registration Ability to manage a team and lead and motivate staff Excellent level of English language demonstrated through effective communication skills both verbal and written Strong clinical knowledge and excellent understanding of care of the elderly and mental health conditions Demonstrable knowledge of the Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority, the Nursing Homes Legislation and Minimum Standards Planning and organisation skills Competent interpersonal skills Able to manage difficult situations effectively Ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines Ability to implement effective time management for self and others.
