Job Description

Role Summary

We are seeking an enthusiastic, creative, and hard-working Plasma Engineer to join our team in the development of our flagship satellite designed for Ultra-Low Earth Orbit (ULEO) missions. You will be instrumental in both the experimental and theoretical investigation of RF discharge plasma for various plasma devices, including thrusters and cathodes, which are crucial subsystems of our air-breathing propulsion system.

About NewOrbit Space

NewOrbit is pioneering the first air-breathing electric propulsion (ABEP) system to be trialed in ULEO. Operating in ULEO offers game-changing benefits to satellite applications, but it requires a propulsion system capable of counteracting drag from atmospheric particles. Our mission is to harness these particles as propellant, enabling long-duration missions in these challenging orbits.

Please note that this is not a regular 9-5 job, but that this is an early stage start-up.

Responsibilities

  • Plasma System Design: Design, assemble, test, and optimize plasma thrusters and cathodes with minimal supervision, contributing to the development of cutting-edge propulsion technology.
  • Plasma Research: Conduct experimental and theoretical research into the behavior and dependencies of RF discharge plasma, with a focus on applications in electric propulsion systems.
  • Diagnostic Techniques: Utilize advanced plasma diagnostics, including Faraday probes, Langmuir probes, and other relevant equipment, to analyze and optimize plasma performance.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including propulsion, electronics, and satellite engineers, to integrate plasma subsystems into the overall satellite architecture.
  • Documentation: Maintain detailed records of experiments, designs, and test results, ensuring that all findings are well-documented and communicated effectively to the broader team.

Fundamental Requirements

  • Educational Background: Advanced degree (MEng, MSc, or PhD) in Aerospace Engineering, Plasma Science, or a related field, with a strong focus on low-pressure plasma physics and vacuum technology.
  • Industry Experience: Relevant experience in plasma research and development, with a track record of successful projects in plasma engines, various plasma sources, PVD, accelerometers or other,
  • Technical Expertise: Strong theoretical and practical understanding of low-pressure plasma physics, vacuum technology, and RF plasma devices (e.g., ICP, CCP, Helicon, and magnetized plasma).
  • Hands-On Skills: Proficiency in designing, assembling, testing, and optimizing plasma thrusters and cathodes, with experience using electronics lab equipment and plasma diagnostics.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent communication, leadership, and teamwork abilities, with the capability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Innovation and Drive: A passion for groundbreaking space science and a desire to contribute to innovative propulsion technologies that will redefine satellite operations.

Additional Requirements

  • Research Experience: Experience in research and development projects, including PhD research related to plasma and electric propulsion systems.
  • Optimization Skills: Experience in planning and executing complex multi-parametric optimization tests for plasma devices.
  • CAD Proficiency: Basic experience with CAD modeling and drawings, using tools such as SolidWorks, CATIA, or NX.

Why NewOrbit

  • Pioneering Space Technology: Contribute to the development and launch of technology that will redefine satellite operations in ultra-low Earth orbits.
  • Impact and Ownership: Experience a rare level of involvement in the full lifecycle of satellite technology development, facing diverse challenges as you prepare our propulsion system for space.
  • Equity and Competitive Salary: NewOrbit offers competitive salaries and company ownership stakes, rewarding dedication and hard work with a tangible stake in the business you are helping to build.

Application Process

Our interview process consists of four stages. The initial stage involves a call with Alex, followed by two interviews with our founders, Anatolii and Ruslan. If you progress successfully through these stages, you will be invited to complete a set of technical tasks, which will be reviewed and discussed during the fourth and final interview. If feasible, we would also like to invite you to our facilities in Reading as part of the final interview. Here you will get the chance to meet the rest of our team and tour our laboratories and office spaces.
